Mamma, mi hanno cancellato tutta la mia Gmail!

Una settimana fa, alcuni utenti Gmail si sono accorti di avere la propria casella Gmail completamente vuota, email, contatti, chat etc etc. Il primo messaggio è apparso su google groups il 19 dicembre, nel quale il malcapitato ha chiesto spiegazioni sulla cosa e aiuto! Tanti altri utenti Gmail si sono aggiunti a questa conversazione. Quasi tutti hanno segnalato la cosa dicendo di usare come browser Firefox 2.0 e che il loro Gmail era aperto quando hanno visto un "errore". L'errore era questo:

“This is not a mistake. All your emails and contacts have been deleted on purpose. This was a malicious attack and not an error. Have a nice day. =)”

Nel frattempo un utente Firefox 2.0 ha segnalato un problema di sicurezza che poi è stato corretto con il rilascio di Firefox 2.0.0.1. Il 22 dicembre un rappresentante di google, sempre sulla stessa discussione ha aggiunto:

Thank you all for reporting this issue. We apologize for the scare and inconvenience that it’s causing. We’re actively investigating as we speak, and we’ll follow up individually with users in this thread as we get to the bottom of the problem. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Google’s official policy is that once emails are deleted, they are gone forever. And based on the Google Groups thread, no one has been able to have their Gmail accounts restored to pre-deletion status. Regretfully, a small number of our users — around 60 — lost some or all of their email received prior to December 18th. Once we found out about this issue, we worked day and night to confirm that only a few accounts were affected and to do whatever we could to restore as much of the users’ accounts as we could. We’ve also reached out to the people who were affected to apologize and to work with them to restore the email from any personal backup they might have. We know how important Gmail is to our users – we use it ourselves for our corporate email. We have extensive safeguards in place to protect email stored with Gmail and we are confident that this is a small and isolated incident.

Il caso non è molto esteso, si tratta di una sessantina di utenti, i quali comunque hanno perso tutto... un disastro!
La cosa non è molto simpatica, se utilizzate Gmail solo on-line, vi invitiamo ad aggiornare il vostro Firefox alla release 2.0.0.1 e ogni tanto a fare qualche backup. Sinceramente MAI avrei pensato di dover fare una cosa come questa "per precauzione", dato che pensavo che la mia Gmail fosse (forte della "potenza tecnologica" di Google) assolutamente al sicuro!

Per il backup è molto semplice, basta abilitare sulla vostra Gmail il download via POP3 e configurare il vostro client di posta per scaricare la casella... mantenendo una copia sul server, altrimenti siamo punto e a capo :)
